A Letter to My Daughter

When I read your note about all your feelings and ways in which you beat yourself up I thought it's no wonder she's having a rough time. I agreed with many things you said and believe me your self awareness is pretty good but not as gentle as I would like for my oldest daughter. Acceptance is just sitting quietly and acknowledging what's true. What's true is you're having a wonderful time and there are days when you meltdown. What's true is that you have limiting beliefs about yourself and are ordering shit sandwiches instead of roast beef. You are Gold my dear. Your greatest worry shouldn't be that you are nuisance to someone else. There is no such thing as a 'great' worry. Worries aren't great. This approval seeking is immobilizing you and making you neurotic but don't worry my sweet daughter it happens to the best of us. This universal popularity you so desire with every fiber of your being is.... well.... shall we say a waste of ...

Do you ever wonder how violence impacts our behaviour and attitudes?

I went to find something to watch the other night.  Every type of violence you can imagine was on the menu; human trafficking, terrorists, torture, shootings, rape, revenge, kidnapping, serial killers, bombs and guns.  There are forests that aren’t as shady as some of these shows.   I might never recover and I just read the titles.  Am I the only one that thinks all this violence isn’t making us feel safe in the world?  Are we corrupting our kid’s impressionable minds exposing them to such gore?  Does it desensitize them to actual pain and suffering?  Ok, I’ll get off my soapbox. I remember my daughters started watching Criminal Minds and suddenly I’m waking up to a large teenager sleeping in my bed.  The media bombards us with violence every day – It’s a competitive industry and violence sells so they shove it down our throats.  Of course we’re saddened and outraged when it happens for real yet it’s not enough.  We nee...

Pills Should be the Last Resort not the Only Resort

There’s a pharmaceutical solution for every problem.  But not every problem needs a pharmaceutical solution.    What’s wrong with being a little crazy?  Pills are a quick fix.  Our fast pace society doesn’t value or support the kind of deep work that’s necessary to help people navigate through turbulent waters.  It’s more convenient to give a prescription.  There are huge multi-national drug companies behind these solutions.  Pills should be the last resort but are often the only resort.  I can see where it’s difficult for a Doctor to know what the best course of action should be and isn`t it better to be safe than sorry?  Mental illness exists and such drugs can be life-saving. Antidepressants are helpful and good for some people.    Depression is nothing to be ashamed of.  It’s the waiting list for support that people can’t access or afford that’s shameful.  It’s the stigma around it that’s shamefu...

5 Strategies for Inspired Living

Image
It takes discipline and practice to create a mindset where inspiration thrives. Most of us have been hardwired for struggle.  Life can be discouraging at times and we allow ourselves to get depleted by these bad mental states. We need good habits and routines that keep us on track.  Here are 5 strategies to create an inspired life.  Create a daily ritual.   It seems quirky, but without my daily ritual I just react all day long and do whatever comes up. I’m like a flag in the wind. I’m never as effective as I want to be and nothing seems very meaningful.  Find that sacred space and time to unwrap the day gently.  It sets the tone for the rest of your day. Replenish with silence.   Let silence marinate into your bones and soften your orientation to life.  A calm mind connects to your body and feeds your soul. Silence will rebalance your energy and is absolutely essential for inspired living. Frantic inside equals frantic out...
